Computers
As we are all well aware, computers pervade every part of modern life, either in their own right or incorporated into other technologies. Great Britain is no exception. From the earliest times, technology has developed and evolved and will continue to change in the future. With the advent of computers and the internet, in particular, this rate of change continues to accelerate in Britain as well as globally.
Previously, we could categorise computer applications into different areas with relative ease, whether hardware or software. Computers are now so ubiquitous across Britain that the way in which they are able to communicate with each other has become far more important to computer users than the detailed technical specifications of the individual items of hardware and software.
Computer Graphics
With the increasing availability of raw computer power at relatively low prices, the many uses of computer graphics have become key factors in the way that computers are used today and what they are able to offer the computer user. Graphical user interfaces have made computers much easier to operate for non-technical users, with multimedia applications and computer aided design increasingly becoming part of the mainstream. Ever increasing use of digital cameras, mobile phones and other portable devices have encouraged these trends.
However, the biggest driver of the current phase of the computing revolution is communication via the internet. It’s sometimes difficult to believe that the web didn’t come into being until the early 1990s. Before that time, the internet was really only a playground for ‘techies’ and a few pioneering email users. The internet has transformed the way that computers are used and how companies operate and individuals communicate, both locally across Britain and internationally.
UK E-Commerce
The development of e-commerce is transforming the UK marketplace for many products and services. It’s probably no revelation that computer hardware and software suppliers are able to market their products successfully via the web. What is more surprising, perhaps, is the success of other online businesses selling everything from organic foods and books to motor and home insurance and even do-it-yourself divorce kits. Computers and the internet have enabled the creation of businesses that could not have existed before and allowed them to be run from locations anywhere in the world that has a basic communications infrastructure – from one person operations deep in the British countryside to vast call centres in major cities.
Sharing Information
Immediate availability of massive amounts of information is the other major benefit brought to us by the internet. Whether you’re looking for a video clip of a politician making a fool of himself, the recipe for the perfect casserole or simply someone’s phone number, it’s all there at your fingertips thanks to computers and the internet. Sharing information with your friends and acquaintances is also becoming easier thanks to social networking websites such as FaceBook.
Computers are changing the way people interact in Britain as well as worldwide, and this phenomenon is going to continue
